A documentary that tells of the great family of the Italian cinema, of its heritage of manual skills and of an art for which the entire world envies Cinecittà. Thanks to names which have never become ‘brands’ and to the hands of special artisans who passed on their skills, as a family secret, from father to son. Handmade Cinema had the premiere yesterday, in Rome. Written by Laura delli Colli and Guido Torlonia, directed by Guido Torlonia and produced by Luchino Visconti di Modrone with the support of Louis Vuitton, it is a film with and about artisans and artists, celebrating the respect and passion for the transmission of a treasured savoir-faire, paying tribute to a craft which is still alive today in a world of cinema which risks to lose its uniqueness as a form of art to special effects.
Without these artisans’ patience, creativity and experience, the movie industry would lose the hands, the sensibility, the incredible capacity to achieve the perfection in the details which has built the tradition and the style of the great Italian cinema industry. They are the ones behind the imposing sets in Cleopatra, Ben Hur, The Name of The Rose or Gangs of New York. The ones behind the unforgettable costumes in The Leopard or Death in Venice. The ones who, just as in art or in haute couture, have made every piece from every film they have worked for, unique, artiggianale.
“In this film hands are always in close-up. Hands that tell of the passion and history of real dynasties, family businesses which today still continue to pass on not just the tradition, but the skill needed to building a film starting from a pair of scissors, a needle, a hammer and a screwdriver, a comb, a make-up brush, a semiprecious stone or maybe a little artisan idea which still manages to compete with technology.” The film marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between Louis Vuitton and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, through which LV will support and encourage the young talents of the Italian cinema. Take a look at the trailer.

I am dying to see this! I am always blown away by the talented people I meet behind-the-scenes, especially people twice my age who have worked with such amazing designers. I admire their skills so much and wonder what will happen when they are gone as there are not many learning these trades now.

Very important that Italy starts advocating For any kind of craftsmanship, especially now that things have lost somehow quality and sense of tradition due to computer advances. I love the Italian culture and we should not forget that they’ve been visionaries and innovators in almost everything design related. It’s really a shame that because cheap labor worldwide Italy has been so affected. I’ll make sure I’ll watch this documentary.
Thank you for the info Dear Ada. Have a happy weekend!
@Mary Jo
Mary Jo, this is what Louis Vuitton is trying to do in association with Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, the oldest film school in Western Europe: support young talents to carry on the craftsmanship behind the making of a film. An extraordinary initiative.
