It’s Great to Be Young

by guest writer

it's great to be young-1956

It’s Great To Be Young is one of Britain’s first teenage musicals. Do not consider the movie a “per say” musical, because it is not. With an immaculate cast lead by talented John Mills (Mr. Dingle), who is at his finest, and in a beautiful colour cinematography, It’s Great to Be Young is a heart-warming movie that shows John Mills as a forward-thinking, jazz-loving history teacher who inspires his pupils to stand up for what they believe in.

The comedy emerges from Dingle’s actions on how to teach his class and it gets to the point when he has to fight with the autocratic new headmaster, Frome (Cecil Parker), for his students’ rights. In comparison with other British teenage films of the period, It’s Great to Be Young shows the pupils as not being “delinquents”, but wanting to have the opportunity to express themselves freely, through music in this case. The movie’s rioting voice against the repressive rules of the British educational system is emphasized by the teenagers having to fight their own battle for a noble cause: the reinstatement of their favourite teacher.

Shades of green

classiq-dkny scarf

There are a few items in my wardrobe that I’ve had for years and every time I put them on I love them more. My DKNY scarf is one of them. I’ve been wearing it excessively for five years now and it starts to show signs of wearing out. It is wonderfully versatile and I can practically match it with more than half of my closet. I usually like to work around its shades of green, one of my favourite colours, and pair it with other items I could easily live in, like my Mexx khaki jacket, Ray-Ban Aviators and my Swarovski necklace, a gift from my parents on one of my birthdays, which changes its colour from honey yellow to emerald green depending on how the light falls on it. All, pieces that have been on heavy rotation in my outfits for many seasons and which continue to amaze me how they truly look better with time.

I wish you a lovely weekend!

PS: For breezy summer evenings, I like to pair the look above with white skinny jeans or a white dress and flats.

World Tour by Francisca Mattéoli

world tour by francisca matteoli-vintage hotel labels from the collection of gaston louis vuitton

There is a character in Billy Wilder’s movie Avanti!, Carlo Carlucci (played by Clive Revill), the manager of the hotel where the main action takes place. Carlucci is my favourite character in the film, although Jack Lemmon stars too, who portrays the perfect hotel manager, the man who sees, hears and knows everything: his customers’ secretes, love stories, intrigues. But every bit of information is safe with him, because he does everything with the hotel’s guests’ best interest in mind.

After reading Francisca Mattéoli’s Escape Hotel Stories: Retreat and Refuge in Nature, I couldn’t resist ordering another one of her books: World Tour: Vintage Hotel Labels from the Collection of Gaston-Louis Vuitton. A tribute to travel, the book is an original work, presenting nine hundred hotel labels from the collection of Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the grandson of Louis, the founder of the house of Louis Vuitton. It’s these labels that Francisca uses to take us on a world tour to legendary hotels and destinations around the globe. In her captivating writing style, she tells us 21 travel stories centered around these hotels: we get to learn about the people who lived in those places and their personal experiences. It’s like you’re enveloped in the scenes of a movie, like in Avanti!. Hotels and hotel staff become part of their guests’ lives, even their friends: this is the role they should play for the travellers. It’s this personal feel that I love about the book.

It’s interesting to read a brief history of hotel labels and their important role in the world of travel in the first half of the 20th century. For example, did you know that they served a more discrete function too, enabling hotel stuff to pass coded messages and information about the owner of the luggage – especially regarding his or her propensity to leave tips?  I like these insight tips.

The black and white photos of legendary hotels, of towns and exotic places, and the copies of vintage postcards attached to the book’s pages complete the image of the world of travel, as it once was. You yourself are a globetrotter adventurer who takes a trip back in time to the Golden Age of Travel and crosses paths with the great travel writers, painters, artists, authors, society people, fashionable ladies and aristocrats at the luxury hotels worldwide.

On the Silk Road

mini anden hermes campaign by nathaniel goldberg

In keeping with the relaxed mood and picturesque atmosphere of the last days, I’m turning to this bohemian Hermès campaign photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg featuring gorgeous Mini Anden and Tasha Tilberg. What makes these stunning captures even more inspiring is that the beautiful styling is an excellent guide to how to wear your scarf. Even if you don’t own an Hermès scarf, it’s so easy to become part of the story.

Capturing beauty #29

on the street-milan

This beautiful photograph takes me away to summer evenings tinted in golden light, one of my greatest joys for the months to come. We will be travelling this weekend to celebrate Easter (that’s Orthodox Easter) with my family. I’m looking forward to some quiet days and quality time spent in great company. I wish you the same, and to everyone celebrating this Sunday, Happy Easter!

Here are my latest finds and news from style, fashion, film, photography and beautiful living.
il bisonte-independent bag

Playing with details and the use of materials, with a creative yet simple form of beauty, the Il Bisonte bags combine aesthetic pleasure with functional simplicity. They are the result of a constant search for a special form of originality and of a long creative process which is carried out by expert hands, the expression of the best Tuscan handicraft skills. Wanny Di Filippo, founder and designer of Il Bisonte, “despite turning to the past and to its atmospheres, has also looked to modernity. It is in this openness to what is new, in the fusion between past and modernity, that the Il Bisonte creations find their placement beyond time.” Given all these details, it’s needless to say that I have fallen for this brand.

Maria Filipescu bracelet

maria filipescu bracelet (2)

I’ve been a fan of Maria Filipescu’s jewellery ever since I wrote about her Bounds collection on my blog two years ago. Two weekends ago I went with one of my best friends to the Autor: Contemporary Jewelry Fair and we were both so pleasantly surprised with the beautiful pieces displayed, the works of some amazingly talented Romanian jewellery designers. I instantly recognized Maria’s designs, tried this bracelet on and didn’t want to take it off. I’ve been wearing it ever since. I love its uniqueness and hand craftsmanship: it symbolizes a leaf, not only in shape, but in lightness too – it’s much more fragile and delicate than it looks in the photo. Not just visually beautiful, not just an aesthetic object, it has a meaning and a story and it seems designed to bring harmony and positive energy to its wearer…it does.

Style note: the denim shirt

Garance-Doré by-The-Brander

I’m on the hunt for a true classic denim shirt. I haven’t worn one since high school and forgot all about it in my early twenties, when I experimented so many styles (you’d be surprised). Then, as I was approaching thirty, what previously seemed not me at all suddenly looked right and my personal style finally began to take shape. It’s so easy now, because I know exactly what I want and what works for me. And the denim shirt certainly fits all the criteria: simple, versatile, enduring. It should be one of the bedrocks of any wardrobe.

It seems that lately I’m all about classic American style. The denim shirt has deep roots in the American history, but its appeal is truly universal. And how could it not be? Durable and resourceful, cool and practical, it goes with everything and works every season. It’s certainly earned its place in the select area of timeless pieces. It feels so crisp and polished paired with shades of camel, mustard and beige (I’m thinking of teaming it up with a pair of nude wide-legged linen trousers for the summer). In a sloucher cut, it’s the perfect companion to skinny jeans (I’ve been abusing these lately). You can wear it buttoned up with a statement necklace or paired with jeans for a denim-on-denim look (it works!). Or you can choose a fancy skirt if you love contradiction as I do.

MiH denim shirtNow the only problem is to find the perfect denim shirt. Why do I have the feeling it’s going to be just as hard as finding the perfect white t-shirt or the perfect white shirt? All classic pieces, but which continue to be so elusive. Designers send an infinite number of clothes on the catwalk every season, but when it comes to the most important items, the ones style should be founded on in my opinion, it becomes next to impossible to find them. It’s one of the reasons I always visit the menswear departments. Men’s clothes seem to be designed with style in mind, whereas women’s clothes are more about the fleeting fashions. It’s my way of rebelling against trends. I like this simple, androgynous shirt from MiH Jeans. It looks like a true classic.

The age of innocence

ralph lauren campaign spring 1998

How beautiful is this Ralph Lauren campaign from the spring of 1998 featuring Gisele Bundchen, so young and innocent-looking? Basked in the spring light, white spreads its magic, like a symbol of unattainable purity and a guarantee of timeless beauty. I wish I could find more photos of the collection, as I have the feeling that this supreme simplicity transcended through the entire line…and there is nothing I love more. I hope your week is off to a great start!
