In a 1973 profile, Harper’s Bazaar observed: “Lauren is anything but a classical beauty. Her nose flies west, her mouth flies north, she can cross her left eye at will. She made herself beautiful by learning, watching, willing—not by surgically altering her defects.” Lauren Hutton learned from a young age to turn her flaws into strengths. She took the modelling world by storm in the late 60s with her naturalness and vivacity and became Richard Avedon’s best model, as he himself stated.

With her radiant beauty and athletic body she exuded confidence and health. It’s obvious that Lauren felt good in her own skin. She still does. Develop your own style and flaunt it. That’s her philosophy. “I shop every department. I cruise the women’s, men’s, and kids’s department. The kids’s section always has the funny, whimsical things that make me laugh.” Her words made me smile, because I do that too.

It’s Lauren Hutton I like to think of when I think of American beauty. Diana Vreeland proclaimed her “the best of America”. Genuine smile that’s infectious, undone elegance, and, most importantly, embracing age with grace and maturity. It’s what sets her apart from the overdone American woman that’s taken over the beauty standards of today. “We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life. They are what we have been through and who we want to be.”

At 64, she was the face of Mango’s and Lord and Taylor’s fall ad campaigns. At 65, she appeared in The Row’s ad campaign. At 66, she modelled for her friend Tom Ford’s Womenswear SS 2010 show and she appeared in and styled the J. Crew catalogue. This month on Saturday, Lauren Hutton turns 69 and she is on the cover of the November issue of Vogue Paris. She truly is fabulous at every age.

She’s gorgeous and truly inspiring. For Lauren Hutton (as for Jane Birkin) the beauty is ageless, because it obviously comes from inside.
Wow! Vogue Paris! she deserves it. Her style is timeless and classic and she is still beautiful!
Such an ease and naturalness about her… that’s obviously her charm and she knows how to use it. I can’t believe she will be 69! More power to her! xx
I love her. Just like that. x
She has such a unique face and is indeed ageing gracefully!
She isn’t the most pretty woman but it make her an impressively attractive one.
I wish I could age so gracefully, Ada 😀
She is just so radiant. No other word to describe her.
Thought she looked best in their Vogue Paris cover this month. (Sorry Daria W!)
There is nothing more beautiful than a woman who is fully comfortable in her own skin. I think we could all learn a little something from Lauren Hutton.
She is amazing and such a wonderful role model. I love her philosophy on life. It’s so refreshing to read interviews with someone like her, especially when she talks about the ageing part.
Great post!
lauren hutton has always been my end all style icon. since i was a girl and started to notice “models” she was the first one i noticed and wanted to emulate, although i don’t look a thing like her. she has the best style of all the celebrities. always comfortable in her own skin, she always looks age appropriate, modern and classic at the same time.
great post.
i think if i had to pick a favorite model this would be here. i remember as a child seeing her in magazines and noticing she wasn’t perfect but she was so very beautiful. it was a really priceless message to receive as a little girl with bright red hair and freckles – because there certainly weren’t many representations of what i looked like in the 80’s.
She’s always been a fashion icon!
there is nothing more beautiful than a woman aging gracefully.
“She made herself beautiful by learning, watching, willing”, this is such a great description of her beauty, but I think her innate class is what makes her unique.
I hope I can age as beautifully and gracefully as she has. And love her constancy of style through the years.
