La ciociara (1960)

La ciociara (Two Women) is one of the late movies in the filmography of Vittorio De Sica. Nevertheless, it proves to be one of his best, although the swift from Neorealism is obvious, like starting to cast professional actors, in this case the great Sophia Loren in her Oscar-winning role, which becomes a must for every director of De Sica’s generation. The feeling of Neorealism is still present though through the use of open spaces and the storyline. Describing the relationship between a mother and her daughter, La Ciociara shows us how cruel life can be and how a parent can become a stranger to his own child.
